Weekly Food Menus – Create a Menu Planning Calendar

create your own menu board
Weekly food menus are a great way to save money on your food expense each week. Learn how to create your own menu planning calendar board with these budget meal planning tips!

One of the best ways to save money on your grocery budget is to plan your meals for the week.

But it can be hard sometimes trying to come up with new weekly food menus on a regular basis. So I have made a menu board for my family, and I'd like to inspire you to do the same.

First, understand that I am not a very crafty person. I am simply not patient enough! But, this is actually a good thing. Your menu planning calendar does not have to be picture perfect either.

Just get out there and make one. Follow along in the video below for tips on how to create functional and attractive weekly meal planners.

Supplies for Budget Meal Planning

Here's what you need to get started:
  • A Flat Surface for Your Menu
  • We used a small bamboo cutting board, but I have seen others use picture frames, recycled heavy duty cardboard, or even old baking sheets. Try to reuse an old item around your home.

  • Clothespins
  • I purchased these at walmart for around a dollar

  • Small Cardboard Box to Hold Your Cards
  • I repurposed an ink-cartridge box

  • Colored Paper
  • I bought a pack of textured scrapbooking paper at walmart for $5 to use for this craft, and I have plenty of paper to use later

  • Stickers
  • Again utilizing the scrapbooking department of walmart, this set of leaf stickers was $1

  • Lamination Sheets
  • I purchased a 5-pack of badge sized lamination sheets for a couple bucks.

  • Glue
  • For this weekly food menus project I used elmer’s glue, spray adhesive, and a glue gun

    Make Your Menu Board

First, I came up with a list of 30 meals that the whole family enjoys. I made up a word document, type the words in 48 sized font, and printed them out on white paper. Then I cut out all the words and glued them onto colored paper. I used a clothespin as a measuring tool. I wanted to make sure that when I pinned the meals to the board that they wouldn’t be covered up by the clothespin.

Next, I cut the colored paper out and put the meals into the lamination sheets, then cut them out again. Now my meal cards were done.

I cut the ink cartridge box down to size and covered it with colored paper. I used spray adhesive for that.

I also covered the tops of each of the clothespins with colored paper. I wrote the days, Sunday thru Friday on them. Why no Saturday? Well, we generally have a “blah” night on Saturday, or go out to dinner, so it was easier for me to make my weekly food menus for only 6 days per week. But if you cook at home every night, make sure your board reflects that.

Next, using a glue gun, I glued the clothespins onto my bamboo cutting board. I used one clothespin as a guide to make sure they were evenly spaced, and staggered them a bit. I also used the glue gun to glue the card box on.

After that, it was just decorating with a few stickers!
