They Pay Me to Buy Groceries

by Amy
(Ohio)

Today I went to my grocery store.....(Giant Eagle). Using coupons and sales, I was able to walk out of there with a shopping cart of food...that they paid me to take.

I bought 20 boxes of Betty Crocker Potatoes for $1 each (for each $20 you spend you get a $5 coupon for next purchase)......I also had .35/1 coupons( which double)....which made them .30 a box. My total was $6. I used a $5 coupon I got from buying Pillsbury Toaster Strudels......so, I paid $1 and got a $5 coupon! I did this order 2 times.

I then got 21 boxes of Hamburger Helper for $1 each. Same deal as above. I had .75/3 coupons....which doubled. My total was $5.50 after coupons....then I got another $5 coupon!!

So for a total of $13 I got 42 boxes of Hamburger Helper, and 40 boxes of Betty Crocker Mashed Potatoes. PLUS I used the box tops (110 of them) to trade to other couponers for .05 each. So I will make back 5.50!

tips
by: Anonymous

I am new to this site, but was frugal long before beign frugal and green was in! Here are some tips..

1. Cut open containers of lotion, shampoo, etc- there is always a few more uses in there!

2. I cut up old rags to use around the house- saves on the paper towels

3. Coupons, coupons! Love to get them doubled. Got lots of ideas from the many couponing sites- I do Krogers and Walgreens

4. Buy my kids' clothes from consignment, craigslist, ebay etc then resell them the next season- I come out about even. If I see something valuable (recently nursing PJs for $4) I buy and resell...it takes work, but out clothing budget is tight and I like to dress the kids in nice clothes. Or when to there are good sales, I buy to resell- recently our GAP closed and I bought tons of jeans for $3 each to resell in the fall.

5. We earn free free household items each month (shampoo, lotion, cleaning etc) from a marketing company..I don't know if I can say the name here?

6. We car pool with the neighbors to school- saves about 100 miles every other week-20 miles a day times 5 days.

7. We save and pay cash for everything- nobody makes any interest off this family!

8. We refinanced and our morgage is 3.25%- we pay extra each month toward the principal and are saving thousands.

9. I look for coupons deals online before I buy- like Lowes coupons to save 10% before we go buy paint or new lights, etc. If I do buy soemthing and wonder if I could have done better, I go home, look for a coupon and next time I go to the store I take my receipt and get the money back.

10. My last tip- I realized that I was wasting money when I bought something that didn't fit, or didn't work by tucking it in a closet- my NY resolution- I take everything back to the store right away! Rotton cantelope- call the store, wrong curtains? back to Target, AND I keep all receipts in an envelope so I can take things back!

Thanks Amy for a great post! I love all the free stuff you can get from coupons and refunds too. It's quite thrilling to be able to fill a couple shopping baskets full of food or other items and actually get paid to take them all! Keep up the good work and by all means, have fun!
