Whether you are the host of the event or you simply agree to serve as a guest speaker, public speaking activities can do a lot towards building your business, your brand, and your client base into something that your competitors don’t have. However, despite the many benefits that you gain when you become a public speaker, many people shy away from motivational speaker jobs out of fear.

Some people have a fear of public speaking in general. They don’t like the idea of standing out or being the center of attention. Other people may have a fear of the possible negative things that could happen, such as there being technical glitches or them making a mistake. Other people may have a fear of looking silly or stupid. And these are just a few of the excuses that people may use to rationalize why they don’t want to pursue motivational speaker jobs or why it is not a good idea for them to become a public speaker. However, these excuses can hinder the success of your business.

Imagine, for a second, what one of these motivational speaker jobs can do for your business.

You will get your name out there to more people in your target audience. You will establish yourself as someone with knowledge and experience in your niche. You will gain new potential clients that you may not otherwise have had access to. Your reputation will grow and, thus, so will your brand.

What is Motivational Speaking?

So, before we go any further into just how public speaking activities can benefit you, you might be wondering what, exactly, public speaking activities are. That depends on you, your brand, what products and services you offer, and who your target audience is. Generally, motivational speaker jobs that you perform would be based on these factors. If you are considering hosting or speaking at an event, you would want to ensure that the topic is something that would be appealing to and beneficial for your target audience and that is relevant to your brand.

How Becoming a Public Speaker Works

Now let's dive deeper into how motivational speaker jobs can benefit your business.

Generate quality, laser-targeted leads.
The people who attend your event are likely the ones that are part of your target audience. By attending your event, they have already shown that they are interested in something that you have to offer. If the event is a paid one, they have also shown that they are willing to pay for it. So, all that’s left for you is to make sure you get their info so that you can remain in contact with them. How do you do that? Here are a few methods you can utilize:
  • Utilize squeeze pages and web forms on your blog or website during the signup process.

  • Utilize surveys. These can be sent to your email subscribers, shared with your followers on various social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), and given to the attendees of your public speaking activities either before or after the event (keep in mind that if you do it afterwards, you can ask for feedback). Be sure to make them quick and simple so that people are more likely to actually take the time to complete them. If they are long or complex, people may not feel like it is worth the effort. Also be sure that the survey asks for their first name and their email address.
Advertise You
Motivational speaker jobs can also help you generate the best kind of advertising—word of mouth. Why is this the best form of advertising? Well, for one, it is free. Can’t beat that? Secondly, people are more likely to actually act on recommendations from people that they know. If people who attend your event found that the content was valuable, they will likely tell their friends and associates – some of whom may also be in your target market. And most of them will do so via social media. In fact, you can even ask them to do so. To make it simple for them, provide them with a quick easy way to share your event/website (along with their recommendation) on various social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). You can also ask for them to post recommendations on your website/blog/fan page, etc. All of this will help to build your reputation and establish your brand.

Get recommendations
Motivational speaker jobs can be a great way for you to gather testimonials from your clients. You can ask for them to share what they have gained from attending your public speaking activities. Growth in their own business? Ability to resolve a problem they had been having? Motivation and encouragement? Whatever it is that they learned, gained, or applied from attending your event, have them share it in a variety of ways. They can share it on any of your social media outlets or submit it to you for you to include in a collection of testimonials.

Get recognized as an expert
Conducting public speaking activities, as you can see, can illustrate to people that you are someone worth listening to. Through word of mouth advertising and testimonials from those who have attended your event, you can set yourself up as that “go-to” person in your niche. And that gives you a tremendous leg up over your competition. In fact, conducting even one motivational speaker job can create that “expert” status for you. Just be sure that you give the people what they want!

Market research
By doing motivational speaker jobs for your target audience, you can gain further insight into what other topics/issues your target audience is interested in hearing more about. This can give you ideas on what other types of products/services you can provide as well as provide you with ideas for future public speaking activities. It can also give you great insight into what you are doing right and what could use some improvement.

Make more money
Another way that conducting motivational speaker jobs is that by doing so can open the door for future public speaking activities.

So What Kind of Money Are We Talking About, Anyway?

Many people decide that doing a free event is the best way to get started when they first begin doing public speaking activities. And perhaps it is a great way to get people to show up. After all, everyone loves free things, right? However, by charging for your event, even if it is a very minimal charge, can send out the message that you believe that the information you are providing is worth paying for. Charging for your event also gives you a better picture of who your target audience (the people who are willing to pay for your products or services) are. When it comes to how much you charge, that is largely up to you. Some good things to keep in mind, especially when you are just getting started, are:
  • Will your target audience be able to afford the price? If you set the price too high, you will be alienating the people that you want to show up.

  • What are your competitors charging for similar events? When presented with a similar product or service, people will usually go for the more affordable option. The exception is if they feel the quality of the more expensive option is better. So, unless you feel that you provide a lot more content and value (and can actually provide that), you may want to consider keeping your price around the same as your competitors (if not a bit lower).

  • What is your ultimate goal where it concerns profit? More than likely, the public speaking activities are not where you are hoping to generate the most profit. You are probably using these opportunities to generate more leads. So, while it is beneficial for you to charge for attendance, it is not necessarily as beneficial to try to make a great deal of profit on these events (at least not when you are just beginning).

In general, my advice for those new to public speaking activities, who are using this as a lead-generating tactic, would be to charge a minimal fee. As your business grows, so will your potential to charge more for your services.
