Of course, the other thing to consider is the cost of these cleansers, too.

They can take quite a bite out of your household budget, especially if you buy a separate item for each chore.

Instead of falling victim to the constant barrage of advertising for these products, why not try to make your own household cleaners?

It's not as complicated as you might think, and odds are you already have many of the items needed to do this already around your house.

You'd be surprised how simple it is to create a bathroom cleanser which works just as well as the name brand.

Try to make your own liquid soap and then wonder over why you never did it before!

Need an all-purpose cleanser that isn't harsh on your skin, but still gets everything sparkling clean?

Then give the following ideas a try!

When learning how to make you own household cleaners, you will need to remember a few basic things.

First, don't mix commercial cleaners with your homemade solution. This could be very toxic and harmful to your health.

Don't mix your cleaning ingredients in containers that you use for food, and please be sure to work in a well-ventilated area.

As with any cleaner, make sure you keep it away from children and pets.

If you use spray bottles to make your own household cleaners, be sure to label them and toss the ingredients away after a few weeks.

Now that we've got the warnings out of the way, it's time to start gathering your supplies.

Most of the basic ingredients to make your own liquid soap or to create your own multipurpose cleanser can be found around the house.
  • Baking soda is a must! It whitens, cleanses, and is very nonabrasive which makes it great for cleaning the bathtub or surfaces that you don't want scratched.

  • Vinegar is another household staple with so many uses! It may have a pungent smell but with a few little tricks, such as adding essential oil to it, you can soften its scent. A great ingredient to make window cleaner.

  • Castile soap is an old standby used for decades. It is a great ingredient used to make your own liquid soap along with many other cleanser recipes.

  • 20 Mule-Team Borax is located in the laundry section of the store and it is a common ingredient in most commercially sold cleansers.

  • Ammonia works great as a cleanser, too. It can be mixed with water and other ingredients. Just be sure never to mix ammonia and bleach together! This is extremely dangerous.

  • Essential oils are popular for lots of reasons. Their pleasant scent can be used for relaxation and soothing to masking the harsher scent of some of our homemade cleaning supplies. You may want to use an orange or lavender scent to create a clean smell.

  • Clear spray bottles are a good thing to have on hand, as many of our household cleaners can be created directly in them. Be sure to mark what is inside and how long it's been there.
