Why You Should Make Your Own Chicken Broth

Ok, so maybe you're wondering why you should make your own chicken broth? Why spend time making something that you can buy premade at the store?

Well, for one, you get to choose exactly what goes into it so there are no surprises. Since chicken broth is the base for a lot of recipes, if the broth doesn’t taste the way you want it to, neither will the dish you are making.

Making home made chicken broth allows you to control not only the sodium content of it, but also what other ingredients will be present.

Secondly, its more cost effective to make chicken broth yourself. Especially if you use a chicken broth recipe that yields a large quantity of chicken broth. Instead of having to go out and buy chicken broth every time you want to cook something that requires it, you can learn how to make chicken stock yourself, freeze the leftovers and simply whip some out when needed.

Homemade chicken broth also allows you to recycle bits and pieces of food that you would normally throw away, such as chicken bones, and the ends of carrots and celery.

Lastly, when you learn how to make chicken stock you will be amazed at how easy and tasty it is that you will never go back to the store-bought chicken broth again!



Ingredients for Home Made Chicken Broth

To make homemade chicken broth, you really only need a few key ingredients: chicken (bones and meat), a few choice vegetables, your favorite herbs, and water. Once you learn how to make chicken broth and decide to make it again and again, you can prepare for your next batch by keeping and storing leftover bits and bones from chicken that you serve at various meals. Put them in a big plastic storage bag and toss them in the freezer until you need them. For now, though, you can go to the store and buy two 5 lb hens. This home made chicken broth recipe calls for:
  • 10 lbs of leftover chicken meat and bones (or two 5 lb hens)
  • 3 onions, peeled and quartered
  • 4 large carrots, peeled and chopped (don’t forget to use the ends to maximize on your money)
  • 1 stalk of celery (including the ends), chopped
  • Water
  • You can also add the following ingredients to taste:
  • Salt
  • Parsley
  • Bay Leaves
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme


The Chicken Broth Recipe: Putting It All Together

Now that you have all of the ingredients, all that’s left is to combine and cook. Literally. The steps for how to make chicken broth are as simple as 1-2-3.
  1. Dump all of your ingredients into a large and cover the mixture with water by about two inches. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and then let it simmer uncovered for three hours. You may need to skim some foam off the top.
  2. By this point, your broth will be reduced to about 1/3 of what it was. Strain the broth.
  3. Refrigerate overnight or for 8 hours and then skim off the fat.
  4. Freeze the Leftovers
Congratulations! You have just made your first batch of home made chicken broth. You can use this to make some hearty stew, a variety of soups, and even gravy. And whatever you don’t use now can be bagged up and frozen until you need some more.
