Homemade Toothpaste - Learn How to Make Toothpaste

Homemade toothpaste that is fluoride free is not too difficult to make. Learn how to make toothpaste with this step-by-step video. One toothpaste recipe is for a liquid toothpaste, while the other make your own toothpaste is for a tooth powder.

If you're looking to save money while being able to know exactly what is in your toothpaste, this video is for you. Today, I'll walk you through the steps necessary to make your own toothpaste. These are the recipes I personally use.

Neither of these toothpaste recipes contains fluoride, which is a chemical put into many city water supplies as well as nearly every commercial toothpaste on the market. The experts tell us that we need fluoride for healthy, strong teeth, based on testing done in the 1940s, which has since been questioned.

There is a growing movement across America of mothers who feel that fluoride is dangerous. It has been linked to thyroid cancer, lowered IQ, and dental fluorosis. I encourage you to Google "fluoride dangers" and come to your own conclusions. In the meantime, let's learn how to make toothpaste.

Liquid Homemade Toothpaste Recipe

  • 5 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tbsp liquid castile soap
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 8-10 drops spearmint or peppermint essential oil
  • ½ packet Truvia
  • Soap dispenser
  • In a bowl, mix the coconut oil, castile soap, water, and Truvia, stirring until you've dissolved the Truvia.

A few drops of liquid stevia would work as well. Add your choice of essential oil.

Funnel into a brand new soap dispenser for easy dispensing.

Make sure you label the dispenser "toothpaste" so your husband doesn’t get confused. Two squirts should work nicely for brushing teeth.

This toothpaste does have a slight "soapy" flavor to it, but it is masked by the essential oil. It is quite runny compared to any toothpaste you are used to, but will leave your teeth feeling smooth and clean.

The second toothpaste recipe is a dry recipe. I generally alternate between the two toothpastes, using the first one day, the second the next day.

    Powdered Homemade Toothpaste Recipe

  • 2/3 c baking soda
  • 4 tsp sea salt
  • 10-15 drops spearmint or peppermint essential oil
  • Small jar such as a jelly jar
  • In a bowl, mix the baking soda and sea salt. The salt acts as an abrasive. You can add more or less salt to taste.

Personally, I like my tooth powder with a 2:1 ratio of baking soda vs salt, but that is too salty for the other members in our house.

Add in the essential oil. Store in a small jar. To use, pinch a small amount of tooth powder and place it in your palm. Apply your wet toothbrush to the powder. Brush.

I hope you enjoyed learning how to make your own toothpaste. After using it for a couple weeks, you will find that your teeth feel cleaner than when using store bought products.

How do you feel about fluoride? Something we should worry about? Or a conspiracy theory?
