How To Save Money On Hobbies

Whenever I think of saving money on anything, my mind automatically turns to my local and online resources.

Yard/Garage Sales
Regardless of what your hobby is you may able to stumble upon the tools of the trade at yard/garage sales. And the great thing about these is that you can often negotiate the price (just remember to be reasonable, not greedy). You can even find online yard sales on places like Facebook. So you can see what people have first without having to drive to where they are.

Thrift Stores
The same can be said about thrift stores and flea markets, minus the ability to negotiate on the price. The tradeoff is that you have a wider variety of things to choose from, so you are more likely to find what it is that you are looking for.

Freecycle is a yahoo group (run by local chapters all over the country) that is designed to keep things out of the landfill. It is free to join and simple to use. If you have things that you need to get rid of, that other people may be able to use you post that you have it available for pickup. People then email you to arrange pickup.

If you need something, you simply post that you are looking for it and if someone has it, they will email you to arrange pickup. People post all sorts of things on there from cloth and materials, to books and crafting materials, to electronics and pets. And a ton of things in between. The great thing is that everything is free. People are not allowed to charge for anything that they give. It is definitely worth checking out.

Craigslist is another website that is comprised of numerous local chapters around the country. People post things that they are trying to sell (and sometimes give away). A wide variety of categories and a search option makes it easier to see if the item(s) that you are looking for are available. You can also post your requests in the appropriate categories (or the wanted section , if there is no category for what you want).

You can also utilize Listia, which is another resource for giving away or trading free items. This website, though, is a credits based system. You can earn 550 points to use just by signing up and connecting through Facebook.

While we are discussing these resources, I suppose I should mention that one of the hobbies that make money would be bargain hunting and then selling what you find for more than you paid for it. Of course, this requires you to have the money to spend up front. However, if you have a good idea for the value of things that you find at places like the one mentioned above, you can turn a tidy profit.

Hobbies That Save Money: Couponing

One hobby that can save you a lot of money is the art of couponing. For some people it's just something that you may do every once in a while when you see a particularly good coupon; for others it is a lifestyle; for still others, it is nothing short of an obsession.

If you don't know what couponing is, first crawl out from under the rock you have been hiding under. Couponing involves clipping and using coupons to purchase items. Sounds simple enough, but it can be quite complicated. Skilled couponers know all of their local stores' coupon policies, (whether they double coupons or allow you to stack store and manufacturers coupons and variety of other technical things), they keep track of sales cycles so they know when is the most opportune time to use their coupons, and often end up paying very little or nothing for their purchases.

Couponing: The Extreme Video Course

Couponing is so popular now that there is even a TV show dedicated to it (Extreme Couponing) and couponing classes are popping up all over the country. In fact, if you are knowledgeable enough about couponing, you could even charge people to teach them how to coupon. And, as ironic as it may sound, people will pay money in order to learn how to save more money in the long run.

So this is also one of the hobbies that make money. There is a possible downside to couponing that you should be aware of. Sometimes you may have a coupon for something that you don't really need, but you feel compelled to buy it just because you have a coupon for it. Other times, you may have a coupon that seems like it would be saving you money (after all, that's what they are for, right?).

For example, you may see a coupon for Hamburger Helper that will save you $1.00 when you buy 4 boxes. However, if you wouldn't normally buy 4 boxes of Hamburger Helper, you would actually be spending more money than you intended. Remember, if you don't need it - it's not a bargain.

Hobbies That Save Money: Gardening

For some people gardening is simply a way to create beauty in their yard. For others it is cathartic - a way to relieve stress through hard work. For some, though, gardening can become a way to sustain your family.

I have a friend who has made gardening into a family venture. The entire family, down to the toddler pitches in with planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting. Yes, I said harvesting. My friends have, what I call, a grocery produce section in their backyard. From herbs and spices to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, they have enough food in their backyard to not have to go back to the produce aisle for a very long time.

They capitalize on this by also practicing canning, which means that they can store a lot of their fruits and vegetables for later consumption. And I must admit their pickles and homemade jam are pretty tasty.

Gardening can be a lot of work and there are initial startup costs. However, the end result is that you will be able to save money and feed your family fresh, organic produce. I call that a win-win, baby! Not to mention that this can easily become one the hobbies that make money if you decide to sell some of your crops or sell some of the things that you can.

Hobbies That Save Money: Making Homemade Cleaning Supplies

Most frugally minded mamas have heard the buzz about making your own laundry detergent or homemade soaps. But did you ever consider that this could be a hobby? You could play around with the different recipes, adding in your own variations. You might even learn enough to be able to concoct your own recipe. And this is yet another hobby that could become one of the hobbies that make money.

Hobbies That Save Money: Become a Mrs. Fix It

Who says that handymen had to be men? A lot of women are getting more and more involved in home repairs and renovations as well as in simply learning what makes things tick and how to fix them when they don’t. You can imagine how much money this could save you.

Computer on the fritz? Rather than taking it to a repair shop or buying another, maybe you could figure out what is wrong with it yourself and fix it. The same thing goes for a lot of other appliances. Possibly even with smaller problems with your car. And with the abundance of repair manuals available, you can learn how to troubleshoot just about any object that you can purchase.

Hobbies that Make Money: Crafting/Sewing

Of the womens hobbies that make money, crafting and sewing are probably the most popular (not that men can't be awesome at it, too!) If you are blessed with being creative AND being able to actually take it from concept to reality, then the possibilities for making money are immense. People love homemade things and will pay quite a bit for things that are unique, personalized, or customizable. Whether you make homemade jams, cute kid's clothes, snazzy scarves, or home decorations, there is probably somewhere out there looking for it that is willing to pay you to make it.

And in this age of the internet, selling them is really easy. Sure, you can sell them at your local farmer's marker but when that is not a possibility (or something you want to do) you can always turn to websites like eBay and Etsy that allow you to set up a virtual store where people can log on, check out your products, and pay for them. All you have to do is make sure you have their order ready and that you ship it in a timely manner.

Not only are these womens hobbies that make money, but they can also save you money. For example, if you are very crafty, you could probably learn to make a lot of things that you would normally buy. You could also repurpose or refurbish items that you may normally have thrown away.

Hobbies That Make Money: Blogging

If you enjoy writing - regardless of the content - and are sufficiently talented at it, you might find that the blogosphere could become your best friend. Operating a blog is really quite simple and, as a hobby, it doesn't have to cost you a thing.

In fact, you can get started easily with a Blogger account. This blogging platform is a great for beginners who don't really want to get into the technical side of web design and who don't want to spend any money getting started.

Once you find your niche and get going, blogging can be really fun. And, even better, it can be profitable. Some options you have for turning your blog into a moneymaking machine are to incorporate Google AdSense into your blog. This allows Google to place ads in your posts that it feels is related to the content. You get paid each time someone clicks on the ad. You may not make much at first when you are still growing your readership, but as your blog becomes more successful, your adsense revenue may grow as well.

Another option would be to sign up for affiliate programs and advertise them on your blog. This could be as simple as having a page on your blog dedicated to "Products I Love" or something like that. You could also post reviews of products as a way to promote them.

Of course, blogging is just hobby income. If you're looking to supplement or even replace an income, go for gold and start your own website. (Don't worry; there's step-by-step instructions.)

Money Saving Techniques

Ok, so now that we have gone over some hobbies that make money, hobbies that save money, and how you can save on your hobbies, let's wrap it up with a few suggestions.
  1. Do Your Research
As with any venture that will require your time, energy, and money you are going to want to do your research. What does your hobby entail? How much time will you need to devote to it? What materials will you need? How is it done? Are there any groups in the area dedicated to your hobby?

  2. Start Small
There's no reason to expect to be a pro at your hobby as soon as you jump in. On the same token, there's no need for you to splurge a lot of money buying top of the line materials. Start small and once you are more advanced in the hobby and know more about the materials and what you really need to get the effects that you, the more experienced hobbyist, want - then you can start looking at the big things.
