Freezer CookingCook Once a Month and Save Money!Freezer cooking. A great solution to saving money in the kitchen is to plan your meals in advance and to cook them all at once, storing in your freezer. I came across this concept a few years ago after reading Frozen Assets Planning Ahead:Basically, you take advantage of buying foods in bulk like chicken, ground beef, tomato sauce, and onions, to name a few. You set aside one day (or part of one day) per month and cook in bulk. Using the recipes in the book, you make up several similar bases, and then add in the specific ingredients needed. Then, you simply take the meal out of the freezer and thaw, reheat and serve! This works very well for those of us who:
To get started with freezer cooking, you will need a freezer, though if you don’t currently have one, just reorganize your regular one and see if you like doing this. Then, if needed, purchase an Energy Star freezer. You will also need a selection of freezer ziplock baggies or Tupperware Rock N Serves. I personally like the Rock N Serves MUCH better than the freezer bags. I only have to buy the Tupperware once, it is intended for use in the freezer, dishwasher and microwave, and, most importantly they are MODULAR. The Tupperware stacks neatly in the freezer (and the fridge for defrosting) and I don’t have to deal with misshapen baggies all over the place. Plus, in the long run, it’s cheaper. Have you SEEN the cost of freezer bags these days?? Plus, you can reheat many of the meals directly in the Tupperware Rock N Serve containers in the microwave, saving you the hassle of finding another cooking container.
If using Tupperware, the following Rock N Serve containers are recommended:
Double Up:Another method of Freezer Cooking to cut food expenses is to simply double your dinners. Each night when you are cooking, make a double batch. Take half of it, and put it into a Rock N Serve container. Freeze. You now have a freezer meal in your inventory. If you do this repeatedly, you will have quite a selection. Here are some other ways to save on food expenses.
