Egg DonationInformation for those Considering Donating EggsEgg Donation. The field of Egg Donors and donation has exploded in the last few years. Pick up any newspaper and you can find an ad looking for donors country wide. What is an Egg Donor? Egg Donation is a medical procedure that extracts the eggs from the ovaries of a woman.
These eggs are then mixed with
sperm in order to form embryos, which are then transferred
to another woman for a pregnancy, or frozen to await a future transfer.
In most cases, the Egg Donor will never get a chance to meet any children resulting from her donation, and quite often will never met the parents the eggs will be donated to. Egg Donors are compensated at different rates, depending on their qualifications and their previous donations. Generally, first time Egg Donors can expect to receive $3,000-5,000 while more experienced donors can receive as high as $10,000 per donation. Unlike surrogacy, an Egg Donor does not need to have had a child in the past.
The requirements for an Egg Donor generally are as follows:
Donation is a serious medical procedure. You will be placed on hormones and medication, both oral and injectable, for several weeks prior to the procedure. The procedure itself requires general anesthesia, and will require recovery time. It is also important to note that women who decide to donate eggs need to consider the family ramifications such donations will cause. For instance, when I told my mother about my desire to become a Gestational Surrogate Mother, she eventually accepted the idea. But she made it clear to me that she would have a very difficult time knowing that she had biological grandchildren out there that were not a part of her life. Your children would have half-siblings they would never know as well. Just something to consider. Women who have had their tubes tied are eligible to become Egg Donors.
