eBay ShippingLearn the Right Way to Ship Your eBay Itemsebay shipping. When you list your eBay item, there will be a place where you get to determine how you would like to ship your item. Before you get started with eBay shipping, you will need to decide what methods of shipping you will offer. First, decide if you will be offering USPS which is the Post Office, or UPS shipping, or both. FedEx is also an option. USPS![]() Most eBay sellers who carry product will decide to use USPS. This is usually (though not always) the least expensive, and most convenient eBay shipping option for the regular eBay seller. There are several good reasons why most seller choose to ship via USPS. Advantages:
Because USPS offers a variety of mailing classes and options, it is a very attractive service. The following classes are offered: Media Mail For books, DVDS, and CDs, this is a very inexpensive shipping option. Rates are less than half those of Priority Mail. These materials take the longest to arrive, typically 10-14 days. Domestic Only. First Class This is a great, inexpensive mailing rate for packages less than 13 ounces. Generally takes 3-6 days. Priority Mail USPS offers 2-3 day Priority Mail. The reason most sellers offer this service, sometimes exclusively, is because USPS gives you totally FREE Priority Mail Boxes. The rules state that you must use them ONLY for Priority Mail packages. I have seen some less scrupulous sellers turn boxes inside out and use them for other classes, which is wrong, and is how people abuse the system until it is not longer available. If you are going to be selling on eBay, you will want to create a free USPS account and order Priority Mail boxes as soon as possible. Flat Rate Boxes USPS offers two different versions of its Flat Rate Priority Mail boxes. These boxes will ship for a flat rate, currently $8.95, no matter how heavy the box is. (Up to 70 lbs). This is great for smaller, heavy items that would cost a fortune to ship otherwise. When ordering your free Priority Mail Boxes, make sure to get some of each of the sizes of these. Parcel Post Parcel Post mail is generally slightly cheaper than Priority Mail, and takes a few days longer. Because these boxes are not free to sellers, most sellers do not offer Parcel Post. Personally, if the package is over 3 pounds and will not fit into a Priority Mail Flat Rate box, I do offer Parcel Post as an option. I offer it as the second option, not the first, and most customers still use Priority Mail.

Padded Envelopes
For Media Mail and First Class items that cannot be shipped via Priority Mail boxes, you will want a supply of Padded Envelopes.
I always buy my eBay shipping supplies right on eBay. The prices are good, and the service is great, plus it helps me to build up my feedback.
I tend to purchase the largest padded envelopes available, or at the very least, no smaller than 9” x 13”. When I have smaller items, I simply cut the padded mailer in half and tape it closed. This seems to be more cost effective for me.

Packaging Tape
No matter what you are doing on eBay, unless your products are dropshipped or digital, you will need a good supply of packaging tape.
If you go out to Wal-Mart or Office Depot, you will find that one roll of packaging tape can cost as much as $5. Its outrageous!
I buy mine in bulk, right off of, you guessed it, eBay.
If you click the link below, you will find great deals on packaging tape.
I always purchase tape, bubble wrap and mailers from ebay.
Whatever seller you choose to use to get your packaging tape, make sure you invest in a packaging tape gun. You can purchase these off eBay or at Wal-Mart for around $10-15. It will save you hours, every week, and untold frustration.

Bubble Wrap
If you are going to be mailing anything fragile, at any time, you will want to have a supply of bubble wrap on hand. Again, I purchase mine on eBay.
If your bubble wrap needs are small, you could always save the wrap from various packages you order personally.
You can use newspaper to pad packages, but it tends to be heavier.
Regardless of what you use, make sure you are packaging your packages well. Wrap each item individually, and pad with air bubbles, packaging peanuts, newspaper or bubble wrap. This makes a big difference in shipping, as items WILL get broken if you do not take the necessary steps.

Postage Scale
A good postage scale is a must. You will need to be able to accurately weigh your items in order to determine appropriate shipping charges. When eBay shipping charges are simply guessed at, oftentimes the seller has to “eat” a lot of extra money in postage.
You will want a scale that weighs around 10 lbs. The 5lb scales are too small, and anything else would probably not be necessary.
The Post Office carries scales for purchase for home use, but, again, my suggestion would be to simply purchase your scale off eBay directly.
When listing your items, make sure that you weigh the item, box, and any packaging materials.

Online
Shipping
PaypalThe biggest source of online eBay shipping is Paypal.
With PayPal you are able to simply log into your account, click which items you would like to ship, and you are able to print postage. You can print all classes of Domestic Mail, including Priority Mail, First Class Mail, Media Mail and Parcel Post.
Each class of mail will automatically be charged a Delivery Confirmation fee, which is at a reduced rate from that you would pay at the Post Office. For Priority Mail, it is FREE, and the other classes it’s around 20cents. This is not optional, this is mandatory.
PayPal will even send your buyers an email with their Delivery Confirmation number on it.
Those eBay buyers who choose to pay via money order can be imported into PayPal's MultiOrder Shipping page.
Stamps.com
Another online shipping method is Stamps.com.
With Stamps.com you can print postage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
They do offer a FREE trial program where they will give you a starter kit and FREE postage to try it out.
This is a good program for those who ship on eBay and do other things as well, or those who want a more professional look to their postage, or who do not want to be stuck paying a Delivery Confirmation fee on each First Class or Media Mail item.
Insurance and Delivery Confirmation
Why is Delivery Confirmation important?I am of the camp that you should purchase Delivery Confirmation on EVERY item when you are ebay shipping. This is for your protection, not the buyers. If you have sent someone an item, and they are less than scrupulous, they can say that they never received it. Without Delivery Confirmation you have no proof that it was sent.
So I make sure that all my items have Delivery Confirmation on them, to protect myself. If an eBay or PayPal claim should arise, it is the seller’s responsibility to provide proof that the item was shipped, which you can only do with Delivery Confirmation.
What about Insurance?
I hate insurance. I try and deal with it as little as possible.
Basically, when you purchase Insurance, which starts around $2, the Post Office will reimburse the cost of the item if they lose it or damage it in shipping.
In order to claim the damage and get reimbursed, however, both the buyer and the seller need to fill out paperwork, provide the package for inspection, provide transaction details, and wait.
It takes weeks to arrive, and by then you have a ticked off buyer. Or worse yet, you fill out the paperwork and the buyer never does, then he leaves you negative feedback because he purchased insurance and never got his money back!
Plus, what is the point to spend $2 to insure a $10 item?
I only offer insurance on high value, breakable items, and then only if the buyer specifically requests it.
I have seen sellers, who, also frustrated by the hoops one has to jump through in order to process an insurance claim, offer self funded insurance.
That is to say, they trust their packaging abilities and charge their customers the same amount the Post Office would, but instead of purchasing insurance, they guarantee to reimburse the buyer if the package is broken out of their own funds. This seems to work well.
