ebay and energy saving
I sell my daughter's outgrown clothing and keep the money in my account and with the same money, I buy her new or used clothes off ebay. Its like trading. Every year, I supplement a little bit of shopping in real stores for socks, shoes, hairbows, etc. (things I wouldn't want to reuse). But I only do that shopping one wkend a year on our tax-free shopping days we have in this state. During that tax-free day, I also buy out of season clothes that are super cheap (think less than Goodwill prices for brand new clothes and w/out tax). Also, I love yard sales, most are cheaper than thrift stores. As far as energy saving goes...in the summer: we close all the blinds, shades, curtains, so the sun can't heat up our home and we rarely use the stove or oven and instead use less energy appliances like the toaster oven, heat-wave, and mircowave. In the winter: we open all the blinds and pull back the curtains to allow as much sunlight as possible in, we make everything on the stove or in the oven and after what we have fixed comes out of the oven, we turn it off but we keep the door open to let some heat into the house, we do the same thing with the dishwasher. Year round: we our computer, printer, etc... and tv, dvd player, video game systems all on surge protectors so when they are not in use we just flip off the whole surge prot. (appliances use electricity even when not used if they are left plugged in). And other appliances like kitchen appliances stay unplugged when not in use (except the refrigerator). Also, I don't turn lights on in the house when its sunny out. The lights come on when the sun goes down or when its cloudy out. We also do not own any credit cards, never have, never will! If we don't have cash, then we are not tempted to spend money that we do not have. Also, we have an awesome used books/media store. So, we trade in our books, movies, games, music for trade money in that store and pick out "new to us" stuff w/out spending a dime. I'm super frugal and proud of it. My daughter has specialists that she sees and has anaphylactic food allergies so we have to scrimp to be able to afford her special allergy-free food, all the medical bills, and medicine. |
