Don't Fall into the Coupon Trap!

by Lindley
(Colorado)

While I am obviously a huge fan of the coupon, it is important to remember that coupons are a marketing tool released by a manufacturer to convince you to buy a particular product. Don't forget that coupons should be used on your terms when the deal is right!

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1)Combine coupons with sales.
If an item is not on sale, using a coupon will make it cheaper but a store/generic brand will still probably be less (even with the coupon!)

2) Check unit prices on items.
Often, large companies spend a lot on fancy packaging and then offer less of a product in the package. For example- 6 bags of fruit snacks versus 10 bags in a box.

3) Try to save the lower coupons (for .25 or .35)for a double or triple coupon situation.
Using that coupon without a big sale could result in paying more than you normally would for something!!

Happy Shopping!

Bigger isn't always better
by: Rayven

Its a really good point that you bring up here and one that is often overlooked: buying the bigger size product, even with a coupon, is not always the better deal.

When I was a kid my mom would clip coupons. (I did NOT get my coupon skills from her, however) She would save like $1-5 off her $150 bill.

She would ALWAYS buy the largest size product available. I'm sure the manufacturers loved her!

If a pack of paper plates was $1.99 for 200 or 3.99 for 400 and she had a 50c coupon, she would buy the 400 pack. She thought she was getting the best deal this way.

She never did the math.

$1.99 for 200 (1c each) - 50c = 0.745c each
$3.99 for 400 (1c each) - 50c = 0.8725c each

It doesn't seem like a whole lot, but it adds up.

Buy the smallest size (or cheapest) allowed on the coupon. You will be saving more this way.
