Credit Card Tightwad Tips

There are some great tightwad tips here already, but how about this one...transfer all those high rate credit card balances or better yet, work at paying them off.

A great goal is to pay off your credit card balances. This is bad debt. If you can't afford to pay the entire balance of the card because it is too hard, start by taking baby steps.

A good first step to take is to transfer your balance(s) to a card that offers a 0% APR on balance transfers. Nowadays, most of us get several "pre-approved" credit offers in the mail daily. Some cards and offers are better than others, so make sure you read all the details before deciding which card to use. The ideal would be one that gives you 0% APR on balance transfers for ONE YEAR. Think about this: If you are paying $50 a month in interest every month on a high rate card, that's a savings of over $600 just from taking this one simple action! Now take that $50 monthly savings and pay it towards your balance in addition to your minimum monthly payment to get that card paid off even quicker.

Once you've transferred your balance, make sure you pay your bill on time every month, otherwise the 0% offer will be void and you will start paying interest, plus late fees. And be aware of something called a "Universal Default Clause". Simply put, this clause says that if you make a late payment to ANY creditor, the issuing creditor has the right to charge you a higher APR.

Another thing you can do is negotiate with your credit card company. Just call up customer service and ask them if they would lower your interest rate. If you've made several on-time payments in a row, they may work with you. It takes a little time on the phone to do this, but the savings can make it worth it.

Great comments, Jessica!

Credit card use in this country is getting out of hand. When we decided to go debt free, our credit cards were the first to go. Now we have just two: one we use for emergencies (we don't carry it) and a second we use for everyday purchases and pay it off every two weeks.

One of our favorite family games is "Check the Credit Card Offers". Every time we get to the post office, we get a stack of offers, some good, some hysterically funny. Once we find the funny ones, we pass the terms sheet onto our 8 year old son to read. Even he cannot believe that some people would pay the rates, fees, activation charges, and horrible interest rates that these cards offer.

Our favorite one (in which my name was spelled wrong) offered a $300 credit limit. It came with a $149 activation charge, a $100 annual charge, and a $29 monthly charge. There was another $89 fee for a second card with another $29 monthly charge. Interest was 23.99%. We figured it out, and if you actually decided to take out the card and got one for your spouse, the day you got it you would have a balance of $396, putting you over your limit on day one. (Of course, there was a $39 over the limit fee, and your interest rate went up.)

There are some good cards out there.

If you are transferring your balances, you'll want to find a credit card with the lowest rate possible. If you are just using a credit card for day to day purchases and are disciplined enough to pay off the balance in full each month, then a card with no or low annual fees is better for you.

Whatever you decide, be responsible with your credit cards, and teach your children to be responsible too. We need to make sure this next generation is more informed that we were!

Happy shopping!
