Cheap Birthday Party Favors

cupcake birthday cakes Cheap birthday party favors can be a great way to have a frugal party. Here are some ideas on homemade party favors that will be loved by all.

Everyone loves a birthday party, right? The celebration, the fun and games, the cake, the gifts. What's not to love? A lot of people even go to the effort of creating party favors - little gifts for the party guests to take home as a small token of appreciation for coming to celebrate. You may think that you have to spend a significant amount of money on these party favors, but you would be wrong.

This page is dedicated to cool yet cheap birthday party favors, particularly homemade party favors. When you leave this page, it is my hope that your head will be brimming with party favor ideas to make your child's party one to remember - even after it is over.

Skip the Default Gift

First things, first - you don't have to go the candy route. I know most kids parties have edible party favors (usually a bag of candy), but there are other options. To be honest, the candy that you spend so much time sorting and placing in little baggies usually ends up in one of three places:
  • Gone in 60 seconds. When kids are given candy, their usual modus operandi is to eat as much as possible in as little time as possible.
  • The parents eat the good stuff, perhaps passing one or two pieces to their child, and the rest is stuffed into a cupboard where it remains until the next spring cleaning.
  • The whole baggie of candy is tossed in the trash can by parents who do not allow their child to have sweets.
  • It also appears that moms prefer that "cheap" plastic trinkets not be included in party favors. With the risk of choking and the very real probability of the toys ending up broken and abandoned, it's safe to say that you can keep the money you would have paid for those without guilt. So what can you do?

    Think Outside the Box

When it comes to party favors, don't be afraid to get creative. This can be easy when your party has a theme. Brainstorm cheap birthday party favors that you can pass out that are consistent with your party theme.

For example, if your party theme is cars, you can buy the cheap sets of Matchbox cars and make sure each child goes home with one. If your party theme is princesses, you can send them all home with a tiara. I attended a wedding once where the bride and groom hired an art student (for a very low price) to sit under a tent and sketch caricatures of the guests. That idea can definitely be translated to a birthday party.

Perhaps you could create a mix cd of your child's favorite songs to send home with each child. The possibilities are endless. If you can't think of anything yourself - have no fear. The internet is a vast resource of ideas. Pinterest, especially, is a great website to visit when it comes to creative solutions to everyday problems.

    Get Crafty

Of course, the best way to save money on party favors is to make them yourself. Homemade party favors can be cheap, fun, and meaningful. Rather than sending the kids home with candy, you could make (healthy) mini desserts that are themed.

Put together mason jars filled with homemade playdough (you probably have all of the ingredients already in your kitchen). If you have a digital camera and a photo printer, snap a quick picture of each guest with the birthday boy/girl and attach it to a homemade thank you card to give to each guest as they are leaving. You can even get crafty with the bags by making your own.

Kill Two Birds with One Stone

Most moms are multitasking pros. We kind of have to be, right? Put that skill to use by having the kids do a craft activity that they will be able to take with them. Again, this is easy to incorporate into a themed party.
  • Princess partygoers can make cardboard tiaras and crowns.
  • Tell each parent to bring a plain white t-shirt to the party so that the kids can make tie-dyed t-shirts.
  • Have each child make a mask that they can wear during the party and take home.
  • Buy a craft kit (complete with foam pieces, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, etc.) and let the kids go crazy with a freestyle art session.
  • Everybody wins with this 2-in-1 idea.

    Visit Frugal Headquarters

If cheap birthday party favors are your goal, your first stop should be your local dollar store. Not only can you find cheap party favors such as bubbles, cars, dolls, playdough, reading and coloring books, and crayons; you can also find materials to make your own crafts or to use as an activity AT the party.

    Think Safety

When creating your party favors always keep safety in mind. This means no small toys or candy that the child can choke on. When in doubt, give the party favors to their parents and let them decide.
