Save on Baby Diapers

Powder Thier Bottoms on a Dime

Baby Diapers. There are two ways to diaper your child, and there are ways to save substantial amounts of money on both.

No matter which way you decide to diaper your child, rest assured that this expense can be cut down to size.

There are pros and cons to both cloth and disposable diapering, and no one way is correct.

Each family will need to decide what is best for them.

Cloth Diapers

Are you thinking of cloth diapering your baby?

I cloth diapered my oldest. I absolutely loved it!

I would wash his little diapers and hang them out back on the clothesline, watching them flap in the breeze.

There was some strange, soul-satisfying feeling I would get whenever I did this. It was a truly beautiful site: dozens of cloth diapers, gently swaying in the breeze.

I used to sing a little song, “…and the diapers are blowing in the wind.” (after Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind”).

Ok, enough reminiscence.

You can make or buy your own cloth diapers.

Make Cloth Diapers

Here is an excellent site with step-by-step instructions on how to make pre-fold and fitted diapers, using common materials and flannels. If you are someone who is crafty, or can sew,

The author also has actual physical diaper patterns for sale on her site.

If you’re like me, and own a dust-bunny sewing machine (that is, that no matter how much you’ve tried, you just don’t-or won’t-get it), then purchasing cloth diapers might be a better alternative for you.

There is a great debate on cloth diapering, whether it is more or less expensive than disposable diapers once you factor in the cost of the diapers, the costs of heating the water for cleaning, etc.

Personally, I am in the cloth is cheaper camp, after having both cloth and disposable diapered children.

Buy Cloth Diapers
Probably the best place to purchase cloth diapers is on eBay.  There is an awesome selection, and the prices are very competitive.

Cleaning Diapers

Tips on cleaning cloth diapers:
  • Place them in a bucket of water (change frequently) to await washing
  • NEVER use bleach to clean them; it will break down the material and your diapers will disintegrate. (ask me how I know this)
  • Instead of bleach, use regular detergent and a scoop of Arm and Hammer™ Baking Wash™
  • Carry plastic baggies, small trash bags, or a nylon bag with you in your diaper bag for soiled diapers
